What is the "Chesapeake Romance Writers"
group?
CRW is a chapter of Romance Writers of America, a national
organization for the professional romance writer. Our chapter
strives to provide as much information as possible about the craft of
writing with different speakers and topics for our monthly meetings.
CRW is a mixture of published and non-published writers with a wide
variety of knowledge. We have people writing romance,
science-fiction, non-fiction and children's books. Our members range
from the beginner to the multi-published.
What happens at a typical meeting?
Our meetings are on the first Saturday of every month, unless otherwise
notified. CRW starts with a board meeting at 9
am. Board
meetings are always open to general members.
At 10 am we begin our general meeting where the president
will discuss chapter business.
Once that is completed we have our monthly "Kudos
Awards". This deals with what "writing"
accomplishments each individual at the meeting has met. This gives a
feeling of satisfaction to each member, but also they are given a
"kudos" for their accomplishments. A "kudos" is
a little something meant to provide motivation, which could be a silk rose, a piece of chocolate, or both.
Our program starts at 11 am and generally runs for one
hour, unless otherwise started. The rest of the day is set aside for
the chapter critique group which meets until the library closes, which is
5 pm.
What about lunch?
CRW relies on their members to provide snacks and drinks. We have a social
director and she/he asks different individuals to bring either a breakfast
or lunch item. We usually have coffee, soft drinks, cakes, cookies,
bagels, fruit, and so on. We snack on these items all day, so usually we
have plenty. You won't go hungry at a CRW meeting!
How many people usually attend a meeting or belong to CRW?
Of our 50 member base, we usually have approximately 25 people at most
meetings. We have quite a few members who live out of town and can
not attend regular meetings.
How do I join CRW?
We're glad you asked! We have an application
online that you can print out and mail with your check to our Treasurer,
or you can pay at the meeting. The cost is $30.00 per year. As an affiliate
of RWA ® All members of CRW must also be a member of RWA® (Romance
Writers of America). We do give members 3 months after joining CRW.
*We have applications for RWA® at our meetings as well or
you can go to the website for RWA®
and print out a copy.
**If you have problems printing either, when you attend
our meeting we can give you a copy to fill out.
What is included in the membership costs?
For your membership, we have our monthly meetings and programs, the
critique group, our chapter & critique links, CRW's website, and our
monthly newsletters. We also have all day workshops on a quarterly
bases, that we do charge a nominal fee for. All of the above items
combined together give each member a lot of information about writing.
How do I join the critique group?
On the CRW application there is a section that asks
if you would like to belong to the critique group. As stated above,
the critique group meets after the general meeting, Members of the
critique group are asked to send 1 chapter or 10 pages via the internet on
our special "critique" link. They ask that you send your
chapter by the link before the 15th of each month. This allows
everyone to read over your work and to give you feedback by the next
meeting.
Any other things to know?
The board has decided to have writing programs revolving
around a certain theme. The theme for 2007 is: Jazz up your
writing: The next step. We are planning 4 different all-day
workshops and there will be a charge for these in order to help raise
money for CRW. Please check our website for updates on the workshops
and monthly programs.
